Noto Naskh Arabic
Client: Google
Noto Naskh Arabic is an updated version of Droid Naskh Arabic with added language support and fixed errors.
The fonts can be downloaded from Google Noto Fonts web page.
Droid Naskh is an Arabic type created in 2010 to be used in Google™ products, such as Google Chrome™ and Android™. Designed to complement the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic provided in the Droid Serif family, the Arabic matches the color, alignment, and design details of the Droid Serif, allowing them to be used together for multilingual typesetting. This Naskh style is optimized for reading Arabic script on screen.
Droid Naskh was designed in collaboration with Ascender Corporation and Google to ensure that all screen and web font requirements are met. Google performed several surveys and tested the fonts during the design and development process.
Droid Arabic Naskh is now shipping with the latest Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. Droid Arabic Naskh can be downloaded from Google Font Directory for all online web usage and mobile applications.
Droid Naskh covers all the basic and extended Arabic glyph set to encompass all languages using the Arabic script, like Persian, Urdu, Pashto, and many others.
The large ‘loop height’ and ‘tooth height’ help prevent readers from having to zoom web pages to a larger size to be able to read them. The traditional Naskh forms are softened for less formal documents, such as periodicals and journals. The letterform structures are based on the calligraphic grammatical rules of the Naskh writing style while being drawn with a contemporary feel.
A print version of the fonts is currently being developed, with more calligraphic proportional ascender and descender heights. The Latin counterpart Droid Serif will be incorporated within the fonts to allow bi-script typesetting.
Pascal Zoghbi designed the Arabic letters, while Steve Matteson, from Ascender Corporation, crafted the Latin Letters.
